An American Map

We are delighted to welcome back Anne-Marie Oomen to present her latest book, An American Map. A fascinating chronicle of her recent travels across America, in essays that span rediscovered landscapes, wild back roads, vital cities, and everything in between.

Anne Marie has a wonderful poetic style and a voice that takes readers into the heart of each experience, from the poetry of Alpine meadows to the terror of desert border crossings, the irony of ocean floors littered with live ordnance, and the excitement of a rural film premiering in New York City.

This will be an evening to savor

Anne-Marie is an award-winning writer and self-confessed northern Michigan homebody. She teaches creative writing at Interlochen Academy of the Arts where she is faculty editor for the Interlochen Review

She and her husband, David Early, have built their own home in Empire, Michigan where they live with a large cat named Walt Whitman.

Emily St. John Mandel
July 8th at 7pm

We're very excited to have Emily here. She is a tremendous writer. The Singers Gun is simultaneously a page-turner and a finely written piece of literary fiction.

She burst onto the literary scene in 2009 with her debut, Last Night in Montreal. Her second novel, The Singers Gun, is May 2010's #1 Indie Next Pick - the list of books chosen each month as the best of the new releases by independent bookstores across the country - which proves she is a writer to watch out for, and you can catch her here in Suttons Bay.

"Her novels are contemporary noir tales full of jagged, splintered edges ... Mandel's talent is clearly visible from the get-go." The Los Angeles Times

Winner of the Bellweather Prize for Fiction
Heidi Durrow
July 14th at 7pm

We are delighted and excited that Heidi Durrow - who has appeared on NPR and toured the country discussing The Girl Who Fell from the Sky - will be visting our little store.

She's received praise and rave reviews for her simply magnificent debut.  A coming-of-age tale about the daughter of a Danish immigrant and a black G.I. A beauty with light brown skin and blue eyes who struggles with a world that wants to see her as either black or white.

"Durrow has a terrific ear for dialogue, an ability to summon a wealth of hopes and fears in a single line" NY Times Sunday Book Review

Heidi discusses Nella Lason's Passing as part of the You Must Read This series on NPR's "All Things Considered"
